Restoring Light: Institutional Recovery in Borodyanka

Pillar: Relief & Community | Focus: Medical Infrastructure | Donor: Barbara Friedman

Borodyanka was a pivot point in the battle for Kyiv. During the occupation, the Borodyanka Psychoneurological Care Facility was commandeered as a Russian command post, with Director Marina and her patients held as human shields.

The liberation of the town was only the beginning of the struggle. The facility was left shattered, its patients scattered across the country, and its infrastructure destroyed.

Infrastructure Stabilization Director Marina personally undertook the mission to repatriate her patients, but the facility she brought them back to was dark.

With the targeted support of donor Barbara Friedman, we intervened to restore the facility's energy baseline. This was not a cosmetic repair; it was a full electrical restoration designed to ensure the facility could function during Ukraine's rolling blackouts.

  • Grid Restoration: We procured and installed essential lighting and electrical infrastructure, eliminating the need for staff to navigate halls in the dark.

  • Operational Capacity: We supplied critical appliances to restore the kitchen and care capabilities, ensuring patients could be fed and cared for with dignity.

From Occupation to Resilience This project represents the hard work of recovery. By backing Marina—a leader who protected her patients through artillery fire—we helped transform a site of trauma back into a place of care. The lights are on in Borodyanka, and they are staying on.
