Restoring Critical Medical Infrastructure: 90m Borehole for Sofiivska Hospital

Project: Water & Health (WASH) | Region: Kryvyi Rih District

When the Kakhovka Dam collapsed, the resulting drop in water tables didn't just affect households—it paralyzed critical infrastructure. In the Sofiivska community, the Regional Hospital, which serves a catchment area of 9,000 residents, lost its water supply.

Without running water, a hospital effectively ceases to function. Sterilization, sanitation, and basic patient care become impossible, creating a secondary health crisis on top of the environmental disaster.

The Engineering Solution Bird of Light Ukraine moved to establish an immediate, autonomous water source to bring the facility back online. We funded and executed the drilling of a 90-meter deep-water borehole, bypassing the failing municipal grid to tap directly into clean, deep-earth aquifers.

Operational Impact The completion of this well has restored full functionality to the Sofiivska Regional Hospital.

  • Medical Capacity: The hospital can now resume surgeries, patient care, and sanitation protocols without relying on erratic water truck deliveries.

  • Community Resilience: The well serves as a central, reliable water point for the 9,000 residents of the district, insulating them from future disruptions in the centralized infrastructure.

Strategic Partners This project demonstrates the impact of targeted corporate philanthropy. The drilling was fully funded by Diamondback Energy, whose investment directly restored healthcare access for an entire region.

Execution was managed in close collaboration with our partners, The World Orphan Fund and Spiv Diia, who provided the on-the-ground coordination to ensure the project was completed rapidly and to technical standards.

We have moved beyond temporary relief to permanent restoration.
