Rapid Rehousing: Retrofitting Shelter for 15 IDPs
Pillar: Relief & Community | Partner: The World Orphan Fund | Capacity: 15 Beds
In the race to house Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) before winter, building new structures takes too long. The most efficient strategy is Adaptive Reuse: identifying existing, uninhabitable spaces and rapidly upgrading them to meet living standards.
We identified a facility capable of housing 15 people—a mixed-generation group including 3 children and 5 elderly residents—that was currently unlivable due to a lack of thermal sealing and basic utilities.
Targeted Capital Upgrades In partnership with The World Orphan Fund, we executed a rapid renovation to bring this facility online. We prioritized the critical infrastructure required for immediate human habitation:
Thermal Envelope: Installation of 2 new windows and 2 doors to seal the building against the winter cold.
Sanitation: Installation of 4 toilets and a hot water boiler, creating functional hygiene facilities for a high-density household.
Life Support: Procurement of 4 electric stove tops, 2 refrigerators, and 2 washing machines to allow for autonomous living.
Sleeping Capacity: Delivery of 10 beds and mattresses to ensure immediate occupancy.
The Outcome By focusing on high-impact upgrades, we transformed a cold, empty shell into a fully functional shelter. This project successfully secured warm, safe housing for 15 vulnerable individuals who would otherwise have faced the winter without adequate shelter.
