Every child needs a family

In Ukraine, this is more important than ever

To address the pressing situation, Bird of Light Ukraine will be building foster homes for children as part of the larger Ukrainian plan to transition away from the institutional orphanage system.

This means focusing more on keeping kids with their families where possible and placing children into loving families when not.

UA Childcare Reform

Bird of Light Ukraine in partnership with the Coordination Center for Family Upbringing is working to foster the Ukrainian government's shift towards family-based childcare.

As of 2024, the Ukrainian government will embark on a multi-year journey to de-institutionalize childcare in Ukraine — shifting away from institutional care and towards a family-focused childcare approach. We at Bird of Light Ukraine will be supporting this project by building homes for foster families and by creating nurturing family environments for children to grow up in.

This project is not just critical to supporting the most vulnerable children in Ukraine, but is critical for Ukraine’s future as these reforms are a requirement for Ukraine’s EU accession.

What We’re Building

FAMILY-TYPE CHILDREN’S HOMES

With war comes the loss of parents, and the loss of healthy environments for children to grow up in. What Ukraine needs now is to create environments in which children can safely grow up.

As the adage goes,

It takes a village to raise a child

Our vision is to transform the paradigm of child-rearing. We aim to encourage a more inclusive approach, where the entire community plays a role in fostering the development of its youngest members.

We are starting in

Chernivtsi

Bordering Romania and Moldova, Chernivtsi has been one of the safest regions within Ukraine. Sharing a border with Romania, this has shielded the region from missile and drone strikes from the Black Sea. Being geographically further from Belarus and very far west, this has also made missile strikes far less probable.

Furthermore, with the influx of evacuations from the East towards the West after the onset of the war, we believe that there will be a greater need for development as the population center of gravity shifts Westward, and particularly with regards to services for vulnerable populations.

Turning a Home into a Family

Buildings don’t make families. That’s why we are partnering together with Artolution to do something unique. Along with creating a home, Artolution will be conducting art therapy, bringing together the children, the foster parents, and the surrounding local community. In doing so, create a collective sense of ownership and responsibility for the foster home and the children.

Our aim isn’t just to help children with art therapy. We aim to create a communal family unit.

Playground

A child needs a lot more than just a home. They also need, of course, schooling, and also a place to play. Along with the community family house, we plan on building a modern playground.

Our vision revolves around bringing together a community. What better way to bring together different families than a playground?

Support the future of Ukraine

There are many worthy causes to support in Ukraine. This one is about the future of the nation. That’s why we’re working on this project.
